Isn't the balancing act only difficult because MysteryandMagic games are set up to foster individualization and creative expression? If it was all about character stats, dice rolls, and having to choose your abilities from a set list like you often have to with traditional RPg's, it wouldn't be as difficult, would it? I don't mind traditional role-playing, but it's not as accessible, or convenient, and maybe even as fun as what is offered here. For example, I tried to get involved with another online superhero RPG, and the gamemaster was irritated because I didn't have a set of rules from the RPG they modeled their game after and a set of my own dice. It didn't work out for me there, which was funny because half the message boards on the site were old members lamenting how difficult it was to get new players. I've never seen a site like Prodigy before and never even imagined that this kind of roleplaying was being done. I guess the honeymoon isn't over for me. I haven't gotten over the novelty yet. I'm still thrilled to be roleplaying for the first time in over ten years. Once you get a job and a family it becomes harder and harder to find other people to roleplay with and time to do it.

Töff: The incompatibility of course necessitates compromise. The problems we have here are much more prominent than in movies or comics when superheroes are present, because not one person dictates what works or doesn't. In a comic book a comparatively weak character can take a blow from a super-strong character, and may be incapacitated, but will rarely die, or even break bones. Also the effects on the environment are often much greater than the effects on people. You will see people blowing up buildings or streets with energy rays, but the same ray won't even create a scratch on Spidey, merely knock him around a bit. In a freeform environment I have problems with this kind of mechanics. An energy ray that can blow through a wall or tear a hole into a tarmac surface should easily be able to tear apart a human body, and not all heroes are super-resilient. This is why there SHOULD be a reglementation against insta-kill powers (and weaknesses), but even there it's very hard to draw a line. Without very powerful attacks it's rather hard to even hurt some very resilient heroes, while you could theoretically easily kill tons of others with the same power. However, we DO all posess the ability of compromise, which means that unless a certain player agrees to a lethal attack, it won't be done on him, or will miraculously miss, because the acting player respects the will of his victim. We also need to take for granted certain illogical elements that make up another character, because once superpowers are concerned, we just have no choice but to say: Hey, no matter how, it just works. And the effects may not be physically plausible. In fact only inflexibility (and ill will) creates real balance problems.
