Length of review process

Prodigy: (ooc) Guest Forum: Length of review process

Can't decide on a good name (Goldm2)

How long do you think it will take wayne to reply to this. Last time we had a discussion involving him, i had to email him to actually notice. Is he busy toff?

Sword Saint (Kensei)

I don't really want to quarrel with Wayne, I just want to help people get into the game quickly. It's quite obvious it's pointless to criticise him, and I don't want to stop playing the game over it.

So really, I only want to help.

Freak (Freak)

So basically then, the problem is people who may have trouble making balanced characters or playing those characters in a balanced way maybe because of their age. That isn't Wayne's fault, and should he just reject them all? Sounds like a difficult situation to me.

Sword Saint (Kensei)

I think in a game like this balance comes automatically ingame, because noone will play with you if you do not balance your strengths and weaknesses on your own. Sensible players will see this and balance their characters during play, even if they were not balanced during creation.

However, I think especially in this game it all comes down to interpretation of strengths and weaknesses and their possible ingame application. Some people here have strengths that are so monstrous that should they play them out they could easily dominate the game. Other strengths are just too much when played out fully, but could be countered. But during the application process it's very hard to oversee the actual consequences of a few words, and the impression the reviewer gets may vary very much from the idea the player had in mind.

Freak (Freak)

I agree completely.

It's unfortunate that not everyone is able to take that into consideration while they are designing their characters. I'm sure they try, but whatever reason, be that the age of the player, the complexity of the character, etc., it doesn't work out.

Before we even submit our applications ideally we should anticipate the consequences of our characters abilities ourselves if we can. If we did that the reviewer wouldn't have to. He could just scan over our applications and approve them.

Sword Saint (Kensei)

It's sometimes very hard to anticipate the effects of a combination of powers. This is increased by the "physical" effect a "magical" power can have. Sometimes you just forget to imagine what the logical consequence of a certain "magical" power may be.

By magical I just mean it's impossible physically, an ability that transcends physics but may have physical results.

And even non-magical strengths are open to interpretation. For instance my next character was to have kevlar strengthened skin. Wayne interpreted that as him being completely bullet and blade proof, which of course is totally wrong. Only very thick multi-layered Kevlar totally protects against bullets and any soft fibre-based body armour will always be vulnerable to blades. However, he wouldn't deviate from his view and asked me to change that (and many other things). In consequence I had to change the character completely, and in effect had to write a totally new character (whom I still haven't submitted.) And personally I would have played that character as someone who was rather weak, physically, compared to other people out there.

Well, whatever. I never said reviewing characters was easy, and I totally understand that Wayne wants the last word on everything. I also understand that to different people the same description can sound different. I just wish that experienced players would get a little bit of trust in exchange for the leeway that young players are allowed.

Freak (Freak)

I get what you're saying. I hope things go smoothly for me when I apply for my next character.

töff (Töff)

Kensei's comment about physical results & magic reminds me ... When I first got involved in Prodigy, I said this in my blog.

On the one hand, the game has to run believably. For many of us that means physical (often numeric) definitions.

On the other hand, superhero powers in general are not believable. Strip away the bright colored costumes, and it's either "magic" (whatever that means) or "science" ... but no longer superpowers -- at least, not the kinds we want for our stories & heroes.

I think this is a very difficult balancing act. The two sides are completely(?) incompatible.

Freak (Freak)

Isn't the balancing act only difficult because MysteryandMagic games are set up to foster individualization and creative expression? If it was all about character stats, dice rolls, and having to choose your abilities from a set list like you often have to with traditional RPg's, it wouldn't be as difficult, would it?

I don't mind traditional role-playing, but it's not as accessible, or convenient, and maybe even as fun as what is offered here.

For example, I tried to get involved with another online superhero RPG, and the gamemaster was irritated because I didn't have a set of rules from the RPG they modeled their game after and a set of my own dice. It didn't work out for me there, which was funny because half the message boards on the site were old members lamenting how difficult it was to get new players.

I've never seen a site like Prodigy before and never even imagined that this kind of roleplaying was being done. I guess the honeymoon isn't over for me. I haven't gotten over the novelty yet. I'm still thrilled to be roleplaying for the first time in over ten years. Once you get a job and a family it becomes harder and harder to find other people to roleplay with and time to do it.

Sword Saint (Kensei)

Töff: The incompatibility of course necessitates compromise. The problems we have here are much more prominent than in movies or comics when superheroes are present, because not one person dictates what works or doesn't. In a comic book a comparatively weak character can take a blow from a super-strong character, and may be incapacitated, but will rarely die, or even break bones. Also the effects on the environment are often much greater than the effects on people. You will see people blowing up buildings or streets with energy rays, but the same ray won't even create a scratch on Spidey, merely knock him around a bit.
In a freeform environment I have problems with this kind of mechanics. An energy ray that can blow through a wall or tear a hole into a tarmac surface should easily be able to tear apart a human body, and not all heroes are super-resilient.
This is why there SHOULD be a reglementation against insta-kill powers (and weaknesses), but even there it's very hard to draw a line. Without very powerful attacks it's rather hard to even hurt some very resilient heroes, while you could theoretically easily kill tons of others with the same power.

However, we DO all posess the ability of compromise, which means that unless a certain player agrees to a lethal attack, it won't be done on him, or will miraculously miss, because the acting player respects the will of his victim. We also need to take for granted certain illogical elements that make up another character, because once superpowers are concerned, we just have no choice but to say: Hey, no matter how, it just works. And the effects may not be physically plausible.
In fact only inflexibility (and ill will) creates real balance problems.

It's not over for me either, and I've been hanging around at M&M for ... *counts* ... 7.5 years.

The roleplaying opportunities in the freeform environment just cannot be matched by any other system. Rules and character balance are not limits here; they're just stabilizing tools so you don't crash. When imagination (not just your own, but the imaginations of your gamemates as well!) is your only "limit" ... you've got it made.

Hullo City of Supers!

Submitted an app about a week ago. Havn't had a reply as yet and was wondering if perhaps my email ate any reply. Don't mind waiting, no rush - just want to see what's gwan'n.

Deputy Carp (Carp)

Thank you Super Mod!!!

The Dark Monarch (Darkm)

Hi Carp welcome to the game

Like your character :-)

The Deep Well (Bartleby)

Welcome.

Deputy Carp (Carp)

Why thank you for the warm welcome gents!

And thank you for the compliment! I’m really looking forward to playing. This is such a fantastic game. It looks like there are some great story lines in play. I’ll do my best not to lower the bar!

Hey America, congratulations on the new man in Washington!

The Dark Monarch (Darkm)

Maybe Carp and the Dark Monarch could cross swords sometimes, I've not been in a SL for a while. I'm trying to set up a crime empire in the Little China district.

Deputy Carp (Carp)

Sounds cool... Carp is a lightweigt by current standards and would likely be made into sushi in a direct fight thogh. He could mix it up with a couple of peons or zombie. I will be away from my computer next week and need to finish up where I'm at but I'm game if you don't mind an erratic posting rate.

Mania the Mad (Mania)

hehe aww I was going to have the living dead girl play with the fish

The Dark Monarch (Darkm)

No worries carp the Monarch is no fighter depending on underlings to do his dirty work. I'm looking at setting up a Triad Gang so maybe you could have a few run ins with them

laters - have a good week

:-)

Deputy Carp (Carp)

We can play Mania, but for God’s sakes be gentle and remember that little incident with kitten... Har-har-har! Very cool picture by the way.

Could a vampire drink fish blood? Doesn’t sound very appetizing, but then again neither do snails - but soaked in enough transfats and garlic they are rather yummy. Eggs are probably even more gross if you care to think about it... But let’s not.

Underworld or really underworld... it’s all good, I’m in.

See ya in a week!

Mania the Mad (Mania)

yah but she's realy old and holds a LLLLLOOOOOOTTTTTT of blood in her system, a fish wouldn't do much to sustain her, and she couldn't feed on him with out killing him.....

and she don't kill sentiant life with out a reason....

well mania don't...... her sister dose.
